As a parent now for almost sixteen years I actually understand the fine balance between toddler discipline, and squashing the spirit of a child.
When my first child Ellie was born I was completely new at this thing known as parenting, and I discovered most of the parenting books to be contradictory at greatest and many simply silly at worst. This may sound harsh for some new parents who are searching for a right path as a parent.
I understand as being a parent is really a tricky business particularly when it comes to discipline and particularly toddler discipline, if you go for the free range approach and simply let your children sort of develop in the vain expect all is going to be fine, then you'll probably be living some sort of living nightmare, with your child completely dictating the agenda and totally running your life.
However if you go for total discipline as liked by several in the past, then you be in danger of completely losing the true essences of your children's personality.
I want to say that their is a holy grail of toddler discipline, that you could follow and tick off the list as you go, and trust me a lot of individuals would try to sell it off to you that way. The way I observe it, it's about two core things boundaries and communication particularly as your kid starts to get to the toddler stage and further than.
I still find this to be with my 16 and 13 old kids, I have what i call my fall back position, that's as far as I may go on any given issue, that's my boundary that in many instances my kids over a few years have learnt to understand, however within those boundaries their is a lot of opportunities of freedom of expression and chances to grow as a human being which I personally feel is essential.
To do this although good communication is key while implementing toddler discipline, to this end I have been really lucky to have learnt things for example NLP that have assisted me shape my vocabulary skills and body gestures to get maximum involvement with my kids.
